MeetScribe vs Otter
Same meetings. Two very different deals.
Otter is a good tool, and it works like most meeting tools work: your recordings go up to their computers, the transcript lives on their servers, and you pay every month to keep access to your own history. MeetScribe is built the other way around. It runs on your computer, your library is a file you own, and you pay once.
Side by side
Where your meetings live
Otter: in Otter's cloud, on their servers, under your account.
MeetScribe: on your own computer. Nothing is uploaded, and the tool works fully offline after one short speech-model download the first time you transcribe.
What you pay
Otter: a monthly or yearly subscription. Stop paying and your plan, and access to your history, winds down with it.
MeetScribe: $29 once for the core tool. No subscription. The library you build is yours permanently, whether you ever spend another cent. An optional Pro plan at $9 a month adds automatic syncing from Fathom, and you can cancel it without losing anything.
What it does with a transcript
Otter: gives you the transcript and a summary, searchable inside Otter.
MeetScribe: pulls out every action item with its owner and due date, plus every decision, and keeps a commitments register: what you owe, what you're waiting on, each one backed by the exact words that were said. Nothing gets added to the register until you confirm it, so it never invents an obligation.
Your meetings from everywhere else
Otter: holds the meetings Otter itself recorded or that you bring into Otter.
MeetScribe: takes your exports from Fathom, Otter, Fireflies, and Zoom and puts them all in the one library, next to the meetings you record in MeetScribe itself. One search box over every meeting you have, from every tool you've ever used. If you leave Otter, export your transcripts and they come with you.
Getting started
Otter: make an account, connect your calendar, and it joins and records your calls.
MeetScribe: no account for the core tool. Download it, drop in a recording or a transcript export, and your first 5 meetings are free.
The honest part
Otter is the better pick if you want a tool that joins your calls on its own, transcribes live while people are still talking, and is shared across a whole team. MeetScribe doesn't join your calls, and on a plain recording it doesn't label who said what.
MeetScribe is the better pick if the thing that bothers you is the arrangement itself: your meeting history sitting on someone else's servers, rented back to you month by month, and the promises made in those meetings scattered across transcripts nobody re-reads. That's the problem it was built to solve.
